1. Piggy comes up with a plan, a speech he will approach Jack with. In this plan, he clearly shows he has no understanding of the “ways of the island.” What does Piggy believe Jack will respond to?
He believes that Jack will Respond to his logic and the conch
2. What is it that Sam and eric fear about the savages’ warpaint?
They fear that the faces allow the savages to do things Jack and the hunters would not regularly do.
3. Why does Ralph refuse to paint their faces?
He refused because he said that they are not savages.
4. What two categories does Piggy point out to the hunters? He keeps asking which of these two categories is better.
The two categories are civilization and savagery
5. Who kills Piggy and how?
Piggy died when Roger pushed a rock off a clif and knocked him in the head
6. How does the tribe respond to Piggy’s death?
They didn’t feel guilty about Piggy’s death. Instead, the savages felt more bloodthirsty.

The other tribe was attacking him so he ran away
8. Why do Sam and Eric join the hunters?
Because Jack forced them to.
9. The last sentence states: “Roger advanced upon them [Sam and eric] as one wielding a nameless authority.” What is the “nameless authority” that clings to Roger? In other words, what is his position within the tribe? What is he associated with in the tribe and what keeps building up within him?
His position is the murderer. He takes all the power.
Chapter 12
1. Why does Ralph believe that the savages will not let him alone?
Because of the hatred between Jack and Ralph.
2. What does Ralph do to the “Lord of the Flies”?
He used it as a spear
3. Although he doesn’t like the idea of savages, why does he have such a strong desire to spend the night with them at Castle Rock?
Because he wants them to be his protection from fear.
4. When Ralph asks Sam and eric what the savages plan to do with him if they catch him, what is the boys’ response? What does the response suggest?
Roger had a sharpened stick then used it to put the head of the pig on. Ralph then used it as a weapon.
5. What two tactics do the savages use to get Ralph out of the tangled undergrowth?
The savages roll large boulders then set it on fire.
6. What three possible ways to escape does Ralph consider?
The 3 ways were to clime the tree, break through the line or just hide
7. Which does he decide on?
He decided to break through the line
8. To the officer, what does it appear that the boys were doing?
The police officer thought that the boys were only playing a game.
9. Why was he disappointed in them?
Because he was expecting the British boys to be more civilized
10. Why did the British officers come? What is ironic about that?
He came to rescue the boys and make them stop killing eachother. It’s ironic because the officers job is to kill people
11. What is Percival unable to do and what is the significance of this?
He was unable to remember his name or address.
12. When the officer asks who is in charge, who replies? Is there any argument about this?
Ralph replies.
13. After condemning the boys for their behavior, the author points out that the officer eyes his boat at anchor. After taking the boys on board, what will be the cruiser’s job?
They are going to search and destroy the enemy.
14. A microcosm is a miniature world that mirrors the larger world. Consider the three previous questions and state how the island turns out to be a microcosm.
The island turns out to be a microcosm because if the actions between the officer and the boys
15. In the miniature island world, what is it that these boys represent: Ralph, Piggy, Jack, Roger, and Simon?
Ralph – Democracy, Piggy – Intelligence,

16. In the next to last paragraph, we are told that Ralph cries. Put into your own words the reason Ralph is crying.
Ralph was crying because of how upset he wasn’t on how evil and savage they all got. He was sad that he lost his innocence.
