Ch. 7

  1. Why is Ralph frustrated with his appearance as the chapter begins?What would he like to be able to do?
    He was frustrated because of how dirty his clothes were and how long his hair was. He wanted to take a bath and brush his teeth.
  2. How do the other boys seem to react to the same thing happening to them?
    It didn’t bother the other boys.
  3. What did Simon believe would happen to Ralph?
    Simon believes that Ralph will make it back safely.
  4. At this point, what contrast is presented by Ralph’s daydream?
    The contrast was how innocent his past was compared to his present
  5. How does Ralph get caught up in the irrational lust to injure and kill?
    Ralph said that hunting made him feel more like a man and it made him feel good too after he hit the pig with a spear. Because of the boys chanting “kill the pig” they had the desire to kill and hurt.
  6. What began to happen as the boys played the “hunting game” with Robert acting as a pig?
    It started to become violent.
  7. Why is it especially horrific and savage when Robert says, “You want a real pig . . . because you’ve got to kill him” and Jack replies, “Use a littlun”?
    Its horrific and savage because it was a suggestion of human sacrifice of how they were going to kill the littlelun.
  8. Which of the boys is willing to go back to tell Piggy of their late arrival?
    Simon
  9. Later, Ralph asks Jack why he hates him. However, Ralph already knows and sensed the “rising antagonism.” What does Ralph realize that Jack resents?
    He realizes that Jack resents to him wanting to be a leader himself.
  10. Which three boys go to explore the mountain?
    Ralph, Jack and Roger
  11. Explain what the beast  looked like.
    The beast was described as a creature that bulged as well as a rock like hump where no rock should be.
  12. Why do you suppose the author lets the reader know at the outset that it is the pilot and his parachute, not a beast that the boys find?
    Because when the reader doesn’t know, it makes it more suspenseful.

Ch. 8

  1. How does Jack view the hunters? How does Ralph view them?
    Jack views the hunters as courageous and brave. Ralph views them as boys with sticks.
  2. After Jack calls a meeting, why does he end up leaving the group?
    Jack left the group because he felt hurt that nobody voted for him to replace Ralph as chief.
  3. With the beast looming on the mountain, what does Simon suggest the boys do? Simon suggests for them to go back up the mountain to confront what they saw.
  4. Instead of climbing the mountain, what “obvious” idea does Piggy suggest?
    Piggy suggests to move the location of the fire.
  5. Why do you think most of the bigger boys go off with Jack?
    The bigger boys went with Jack because they didn’t like Ralph’s comments about the hunters. They also felt that it would be safer and more fun with him.
  6. What is Jack’s plan to get more of the bigger boys from Ralph’s camp?
    Jack plans to kill the pig and invite the bigger boys to the feast.
  7. What does he plan for the beast?
    Jack wanted to give some of the pig to the beast to make peace with it so it wouldn’t attack.
  8. For what expressed purpose do they need to “sharpen a stick at both ends”? (pg. 124)
    The purpose was so one end was placed into the ground and the head was placed at the top.
  9. What, in his mind, does Simon name the sow’s head?
    Lord of the flies
  10. After getting over the initial scare, how do most of the boys feel about the raid by the hunters?
    The boys feel that being war painted savages is better than tending a fire.
