Ch. 9

  1. At the beginning of the chapter, explain what Simon discovers and what he realizes he must do.
    Simon discovered that the Beast was nothing but a parachutist. He realized that he must tell the boys what he discovered.
  2. In this chapter, what are signs of Jack’s power?
    Jack started to order everybody to bring him a drink, meat and orders everyone to dance and chant.
  3. What, besides the meat, attracts the others and Ralph, too, to Jack’s life?
    Savagery.
  4. What is “our dance” and what purpose does the dance and chant serve?
    “Or dance” represents the pigs death. It serves them being able to get over their fear.
  5. What comes out of the darkness of the forest? What happens?
    Simon came out of the forest. The boys mistake Simon for the beast and accidentally kills him.
  6. What happens to the body in the parachute?
    The body in the parachute gets blown by the wind into the surf then gets carried out to the sea.

Chapter 10:

  1. Piggy says that the killing of Simon was an accident not murder, and that they are not to blame. To what extent do you think this is true?
    I think that it is true because of how much their fear got to them. They were hunting for the beast that night and was told that it only came out when it was dark, so that’s why it wasn’t entirely their fault.
  2. When Ralph says, “I’m frightened. Of us,” what does he mean that frightens him?
    Ralph means that the savagery caused them to kill Simon. So hes scared of what their savagery is capable of doing.
  3. When they first meet up, are Sam, Eric, Ralph, and Piggy being truthful with each other? Explain.
    No because they all lied about not witnessing or being part of the murder that happened. But they’re fear was telling them otherwise.
  4. What is an example of Jack’s abuse of power?
    When he had Wilfred beaten up for no reason.
  5. How or why do the boys believe Simon was the beast yet are still worried about the beast’s existence?
    The boys believed Simon was the beast because of their fear. They’re still worried about the beats existence because they are afraid of it still being out there.
  6. When the “curtain” in Ralph’s mind is mentioned, what is suggested as happening?
    That Ralph’s losing all of his common sense.
  7. In the raid, why are Piggy’s glasses taken but not the shell?
    Because Piggy’s glasses helped start the fires. Jack doesn’t think that the shell has meaning to it anymore.
