Chapter 7 Assignment

1.  On page 119 Ralph realizes how his appearance has deteriorated.  What does this description convey about how Ralph is coping on the island?

The description conveys that Ralph is coping into becoming more savage and violent.

2.  Define empathy:

The ability to understand and share the feelings of another.

3.  On page 121 explain how Simon shows empathy for Ralph 

He showed emphathy for Ralph by speaking in his ear that he would make it back home after he noticed how upset Ralph was. “You’ll get back to where you cane from” pg.121.

4. Define nostalgia

A sentimental longing or wistful affection for the past.

5.  Explain the purpose of the nostalgic reflection on page 122-123

The purpose of that reflection was to show how much Ralph needed comfort. He was saying how absolute savagery has taken over him. It was mentioning about how much his life has changed since the plane crashed on the island.

6.  On the top pf page 124 Ralph is described as , “full of fright and apprehension and pride”.  Explain this quote.

The quote is referring to how the savagery and violence got to Ralph as well as becoming frightening to the others.

7.  How is Ralph, in particular, getting caught up in the savagery of the hunt provide insight into Golding view of the nature of man?

Ralph is getting caught up in the savagery because of how the others noticed how violent he got and him not caring about his evil actions. He gets really excited when hunting because of the action of ‘killing’.
